Vanilla beans were known only in Mexico until the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés came along in the 1520s. Cortés is, of course, well known for his hunt for gold. But some would argue that the real gold he brought back to Europe was both vanilla and chocolate.
Vanilla bean is the second-most expensive spice after saffron. That’s because growing the seedpods still involves so much handwork. Even now, it’s hoarded and speculated on in the market just like gold.
